Earn Cash With Your Hobby

By Sherrie Murphy

Does your lemon pound cake get rave reviews? Are you constantly being complimented on the necklace and earring set you made in your jewelry class? Do you get offers to buy the beautiful painting on your wall that you created on a whim?

Many people have interesting hobbies that they simply do for the pleasure they experience from them. But you can also put your talents to work for you and let your hobby earn you cash!

What to Sell

Whether it is a craft or a service, your homemade quilt or your handy fix-it skills, you can sell almost anything. However, the best things to sell are those that are unique. If you make jewelry that looks like jewelry a person could buy anywhere then you may not sell as much than if jewelry you made was unique.

What is unique about your craft or service?

Maybe it's the knitted doily shaped like a rose, or the special way you can get the children to smile when taking a family picture. Uniqueness in your craft or service is the key. Not sure what makes your hobby unique? Ask your family, friends, and neighbors what they find unique in your craft or products. Or think of a creative way to add uniqueness to your craft.

How to Sell

There are many places to sell your goods if you know where to look. You should always scan the papers for craft fairs or festivals being held in your area. These places usually will allow you to rent a booth or a table for a small fee where you can then sell your craft or service. You could also sell your crafts or service on the Internet shopping and auction sites such as EBay.com, Amazon.com or Craigslist.org.

To be successful in selling your crafts at craft fairs and festivals you will have to draw people to your booth or table. You draw people to your area by presenting your products in a nicely decorated and appealing way. Make sure to say hello to everyone that walks past your booth or table. Be enthusiastic about the product or service you have to offer. Always be friendly and engage people in conversation about you and your product or service. Engaging people in the story of why and how you created the craft or why you are selling your service helps people connect with you and your product. People are more willing to buy from someone they like and can connect with.

To be successful in selling your crafts on Internet shopping and auction sites make sure you 1st review the rules for selling your craft or service on the site. Provide a picture or pictures of your product. A picture speaks a thousand words and offers customers a visual of what you have to offer. Create a simple but exciting description of your product or service that will capture people's attention and make them want to buy. Communicate promptly to any questions or comments that people may have about what you are selling. Make sure to ship the products or perform the service promptly as well

Pricing

When it comes to pricing your products make sure the prices are reasonable. Do some pricing research online at sites such as Ebay or Amazon to get a good idea of what your product sells for on average. Google.com is also a great resource for price research. "Google" or search for the craft or product you are selling. Google will pull up a number of websites related to your product or service. Visit these sites to find out how other people are pricing these items. Use the information in determining how you will price your craft or service.

If you are selling at a craft fair or festival and notice people are passing over your products due to a too high price then you can always lower the prices. Put out a sign saying you are having a sale and slashing prices to draw back in people who may have passed you over before.

Conclusion

Crafting and other hobbies or services can earn you cash! You may be amazed at how much extra cash selling your hobby items can make for you when you follow these simple ideas:

Offer a unique product or service Sell your unique product or service at craft shows, festivals and/or on Internet shopping and auctions Offer your product or service at a reasonable price
